Prescott, Lamb and Aubrey turn efficiency into 37-20 Cowboys win over Commanders

A passing game that hardly wasted a snap

Dallas built this result on an almost spotless day from Dak Prescott. He completed 26 of 31 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns, never threw an interception, and kept the Cowboys moving on a day when the run game never fully took hold. Dallas managed only 66 rushing yards on 21 attempts, but it hardly mattered because Prescott made the passing game do the heavy lifting from the opening quarter onward.

CeeDee Lamb was the most damaging part of that plan. His eight catches produced 153 yards and two touchdowns, including the first score of the afternoon, a 3-yard catch at 10:01 of the first quarter, and the late finish, a 24-yarder with 3:07 remaining. Jake Ferguson matched him in the category that changes the scoreboard most, catching all four of his targets for 43 yards and two touchdowns. Even when Dallas was not hitting explosive gains, Prescott had answers elsewhere, with George Pickens adding six catches and Ryan Flournoy five more.

The broader number tells the same story: Dallas had only eight drives and scored on seven of them. The Cowboys converted 7 of 11 third downs, finished 3 of 4 red-zone trips with touchdowns, and never gave the ball away. Brandon Aubrey added field goals from 25, 44 and 60 yards, which meant Washington could not survive even the possessions that did not end in the end zone. The Commanders did get to Prescott twice, with sacks from K'Lavon Chaisson and Javon Kinlaw, but they never turned that pressure into a game-changing mistake.

When Washington pushed, Dallas answered faster

Washington was not short on offense. The Commanders produced 389 total yards, picked up 24 first downs, and ran for 182 yards at 5.7 per carry. Jayden Daniels led the ground game with 69 yards on seven carries, while Rachaad White and Jacory Croskey-Merritt added 43 apiece. That gave Washington a foundation to stay in the game, and for stretches it did. Drew Stevens hit from 27 yards early in the second quarter, and Daniels later found Stefon Diggs for a 4-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 17-10.

The game tightened again after halftime when Stevens made from 47 yards at 12:50 of the third quarter to trim Dallas's lead to 17-13. That was the moment Washington needed to turn pressure into control. Instead, the Cowboys delivered the most important burst of the afternoon. Aubrey pushed the margin back to seven with a 44-yard field goal at 7:20, and just 48 seconds later on the game clock Prescott found Ferguson for a 12-yard touchdown. A four-point game became a 14-point game before Washington could settle back into it.

That pattern held all day. Washington scored, Dallas replied. Stevens narrowed it, Dallas widened it. Even after Marcus Mariota connected with Diggs for a 20-yard touchdown at 9:03 of the fourth quarter, bringing the Commanders within 30-20, the Cowboys ended the suspense with Prescott's 24-yard touchdown pass to Lamb at 3:07. There were only two punts in the entire game, one by each team, which made finishing ability even more valuable. Dallas simply finished its opportunities more cleanly.

Our take: the box score says close in volume, not in sharpness

Our take: this was one of those NFL games that reminds you yardage can flatter the wrong side. Washington actually had more total yards, more first downs, more rushing yards and a small edge in possession. But the Commanders also went just 1 for 3 in the red zone, lost a fumble, and missed a field goal. Dallas, by contrast, had zero turnovers, better third-down efficiency, and seven scoring drives in eight chances. That is the difference between moving the ball and cashing it.

If Washington is looking for a clean place to start, it is the finishing of productive drives. A team that rushes for 182 yards and averages 5.8 yards per play should usually force a tighter fourth quarter than this. It would also help to spread the passing output more efficiently: Terry McLaurin was targeted nine times but finished with two catches for 50 yards, while Diggs accounted for both receiving touchdowns. The offense clearly found ways to move, but it did not turn enough of that movement into maximum points.

Dallas leaves with a result that should feel convincing without being mistaken for flawless. The Cowboys were excellent through the air, but 66 rushing yards on 21 attempts is a modest return, and allowing 182 rushing yards is a warning label attached to an otherwise polished win. Still, the clearest truth from Sunday was simple: when a quarterback completes 26 of 31 throws, when his top two targets catch all four touchdown passes, and when his kicker is good from 60, the other team usually needs near-perfect finishing to keep up. Washington had production. Dallas had precision.
