Yohandy Morales and a sharp sixth inning lift Nationals past Tigers 4-2 at Comerica Park

One opening, then one big swing

The game stayed blank through five innings, and that was the first clue about what mattered most here: Washington did not need a parade of hits, only one inning in which its contact lined up with Detroit’s smallest lapse. In the sixth, Andres Chaparro came around when CJ Abrams singled to right. Abrams was thrown out trying to stretch the play, but Brady House moved to second, and the inning remained alive long enough for the Nationals to turn a modest breakthrough into the decisive one.

Yohandy Morales supplied the loudest moment of the afternoon. His 422-foot homer to right-center scored House and changed a 1-0 edge into a 3-0 lead. That sequence also sharpened the difference between Detroit’s pitching line and its result. Framber Valdez gave the Tigers 5.1 innings with six strikeouts and only four hits allowed, but the handoff in the sixth hurt: one inherited runner scored, and Tyler Kinley was charged with the homer Morales delivered.

Detroit answered immediately enough to keep the game honest. Ben Malgeri’s 404-foot shot to left-center got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, trimming the deficit to 3-1. But Washington did not let that become the start of a larger swing. In the seventh, Nasim Nunez scored on James Wood’s groundout to first, a useful insurance run from a lineup that produced only six hits all day but made its better innings count.

Traffic everywhere, but not enough payoff for Detroit

This is the frustrating kind of box score for the Tigers, because there was plenty to work with. Detroit finished with eight hits, drew six walks and still came away with only two runs while leaving 21 men on base. Kevin McGonigle’s 3-for-5 line gave the offense repeated opportunities, and Malgeri was clearly the most productive bat with two hits, a homer and both RBIs. Yet an afternoon with 14 baserunners kept returning to the same theme: the next hit either did not arrive or arrived too late to fully change the score.

Washington’s pitching staff deserves credit, even if the path was rarely smooth. Six Nationals pitchers combined for nine innings, nine strikeouts and just enough escape work. Brad Lord covered 3.1 scoreless innings and allowed only one hit. Will Dion gave up Malgeri’s solo homer but struck out four in his two innings. Yovanny Cruz handled the last 1.1 innings, permitting a late run but finishing off the result. The larger line was effective without being clean: eight hits, six walks and 155 pitches thrown.

Detroit made one final push in the ninth. Jace Jung scored on Malgeri’s single to right, and McGonigle moved to third as the Tigers cut the score to 4-2. That late damage served as a reminder of the game’s central imbalance. Detroit kept presenting itself chances; Washington kept surviving them. When a club strands 21, the final margin rarely feels mysterious.

Our take: efficient Nationals, wasteful Tigers

Our take: Washington won this game by doing the more valuable things in a narrower window. Abrams reached base three times in just two official at-bats, House collected two hits, Morales supplied the decisive extra-base hit, and Nunez found a way to score an added run in the seventh. That is not a dominant offensive line — the Nationals hit .194 as a team and struck out eight times — but it was an opportunistic one. If there is a caution for Washington even in victory, it is the command line. Six walks and 155 pitches invited far more stress than a two-run final suggests.

Our take: Detroit’s improvement case is easier to identify than to solve. The Tigers did enough to put pressure on Washington, and they did it without any help from defensive mistakes because both teams played error-free baseball. But the conversion rate was the problem. Spencer Torkelson went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, Riley Greene finished hitless despite two walks, and too much of the traffic never became a crooked number. When McGonigle reaches three times on hits and Malgeri drives in both runs, the offense usually needs one more contributor in the middle of those innings.

The cleanest verdict is also the simplest one: timing decided this matchup. Detroit actually outhit Washington 8-6 and still lost because the Nationals packed their best work into the sixth and then kept adding just enough resistance. That is not always pretty baseball, but it is winning baseball. On this day, Washington’s few sharp blows mattered more than Detroit’s larger pile of chances.
