EDMONTON found its scoring punch early and kept the New York Islanders off the board entirely, beating New York 4-0 at UBS Arena on Saturday. The result was powered by another production night from Connor McDavid, who added an assist to extend his season-opening point streak to 14 games.

McDavid’s assist came at 18:26 of the second period, when Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his second goal of the night. The pair’s timing mattered in the Oilers’ control of the game, with Edmonton steadily building a lead that would never be seriously threatened after the scoring began.

For the season, McDavid has 35 points through the Oilers’ first games, with eight goals and 27 assists. The total placed him three points shy of matching the 17-game season-opening run he had to start 2021-22, and the league note underlined how rare the pace has been, as he became the first player to reach at least 35 points in a single calendar month since Mario Lemieux did so three times during the 1992-93 season.

Tristan Jarry continued to set the defensive standard for Edmonton. The goaltender made 18 saves to earn his second straight shutout, improving the Oilers’ overall form to 10-2-2. The shutout run also followed a recent performance in which Jarry stopped 24 shots in a 4-0 Oilers win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

Leon Draisaitl added two assists as Edmonton carried a strong stretch of results into a three-game road trip. The Oilers entered the weekend’s victory on a run that had them 5-1-1 in their past seven games, and the league’s recap noted that the road trip continued Sunday at the New York Rangers.

New York’s goaltending matched the Islanders’ recent willingness to win, but it still couldn’t prevent the blanking. Ilya Sorokin made 20 saves for the Islanders, who entered the game with momentum after winning their previous two contests.

The first goal of the game gave Edmonton a lead before the midpoint of the second period. Nugent-Hopkins scored at 8:42 of the second period, turning a rush opportunity into a 1-0 advantage. The play was set up by Kasperi Kapanen, who won a puck battle against Logan Stanley before feeding Nugent-Hopkins.

Edmonton doubled its lead quickly at 9:50 of the second period when Vasily Podkolzin scored to make it 2-0. The goal came from a redirection in front, with Draisaitl’s pass creating the scoring chance for Podkolzin, marking it as his second goal in three games.

The Oilers’ third goal restored separation even further, this time with help from McDavid’s involvement and a power-play scoring sequence. Nugent-Hopkins scored at 18:26 of the second period on a power play, tapping in McDavid’s feed at the far post to give Edmonton a 3-0 lead heading into the third. Since making his season debut on Oct. 22, Nugent-Hopkins has three goals in five games, the league note emphasized.

Edmonton’s power-play goal was also tied to Nugent-Hopkins’ season timeline. He missed Edmonton’s first nine games because of a lower-body injury sustained during practice on Sept. 28, but the recap showed how quickly he returned to the scoring touch once he rejoined the lineup.

With the game essentially settled, Edmonton added a final score at 17:23 of the third period when Jason Dickinson scored an empty-net goal. That marker put the finishing touch on the 4-0 final and prevented New York from generating any late response.

The game also included an incident that affected lineup availability. Edmonton forward Isaac Howard left the ice 2:22 into the match following a collision with New York forward Emil Heineman. Heineman received a five-minute major penalty for kneeing and a game misconduct, according to the league’s recap.

For the Islanders, the loss dropped them to a 7-5-2 record as they looked to bounce back from being shut out after their prior two-game winning run. For Edmonton, the victory extended its momentum into the next test on the road, with the Oilers scheduled to continue the three-game road trip against the New York Rangers on Sunday.
