Mariners name Jason Kanzler as new manager, replacing Dan Wilson
Image accompanying the official MLB announcement.SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners have named Jason Kanzler as the club’s new manager, setting the direction for the organization’s next on-field era after Dan Wilson’s tenure ended following the conclusion of Game 162.
Kanzler, 36, was announced as Seattle’s manager on Tuesday morning, with the club completing its official hire announcement less than an hour later. The team described the move as an “outside-the-box” selection that would make Kanzler a first-time manager at any level.
Before joining the Mariners, Kanzler spent the previous three seasons with the Chicago Cubs as the club’s director of player development. His new role in Seattle gives the organization a manager with a player-development background rather than an established Major League managerial track.
Seattle’s decision followed a multi-stage process that began with Kanzler and another candidate reaching the final stages. The Mariners identified two finalists, including former Astros manager Joe Espada, and both went through a third and final round of interviews last week.
The Mariners’ final interview process took place at T-Mobile Park and included a broad group of club officials. The lineup, as described in the announcement reporting, included members of the ownership group as well as baseball and business operations leadership and members of the Major League coaching staff, among others.
After the interviews, Seattle moved into a decision-making phase between the two finalists. That stretch began last Thursday, continued through the weekend, and carried into Monday, before the club finalized its choice of Kanzler.
In organizational terms, the hire makes Kanzler the 22nd manager in Mariners franchise history. It also represents a third managerial appointment under president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto, whose tenure is entering its 12th season with the organization.
Wilson, who Kanzler is replacing, saw his time as manager conclude after two-plus years immediately following Game 162. The source notes that Wilson’s tenure ended after one of the most disappointing seasons in Mariners franchise history, underscoring the club’s need for a reset at the managerial position.
The Mariners’ transition is also framed within the team’s pursuit of a younger leadership profile. Kanzler is identified as the second-youngest manager in the Majors, behind 34-year-old Nationals skipper Blake Butera, who was 33 at the time he was hired.
As part of the Mariners’ announcement messaging, the club posted a welcome graphic and caption stating, “A new captain at the helm. Jason Kanzler is ready to lead the charge as our new manager. Welcome to Seattle!” The team’s wording accompanied the manager announcement on Tuesday.
With the managerial opening now filled, attention will shift to how Seattle assembles its Major League coaching staff and how it prepares for the next season under Kanzler’s leadership, particularly given his prior experience directing player development in Chicago.
For Seattle, the appointment closes a short but consequential chapter after Wilson’s departure post-Game 162 and adds a first-time manager at any level to the organization’s leadership pipeline, now under Dipoto’s baseball operations oversight.
The hiring of Kanzler also positions the Mariners for a new approach to managing and development, following an offseason decision that began with finalist interviews at T-Mobile Park and ended with the club choosing a 36-year-old director-of-development background over an established former Major League manager in Joe Espada.
