The Oakland Athletics are preparing for another offseason change in leadership, with a reported move that would strengthen the club’s baseball operations department. According to a Wednesday report from MLB.com, the Athletics have found a right-hand executive for new president of baseball operations Taylor Smith by hiring Cam Castro as general manager, though the team had not officially announced the appointment at the time of the report.

The reported hiring comes just over two weeks after Smith was brought in to lead the Athletics’ baseball operations. The A’s front office restructuring is already underway, and the addition of Castro would further define the club’s new management team as the organization looks ahead to upcoming roster and development decisions.

Castro, 36, is described as arriving from the Milwaukee Brewers, the reigning World Series champions. Over the past two seasons in Milwaukee, he held the title of senior vice president of player development and performance, a role that places player development and performance infrastructure at the centre of an organization known for its recent championship run.

Before stepping into his senior leadership position in Milwaukee, Castro joined the Brewers organization in 2019 as a minor league pitching coach. He then advanced through multiple pitching-development roles, with the report noting that from 2020-21 he served as the club’s minor league pitching coordinator and director of pitching development. In 2022, Castro was promoted to vice president of player development, quickly becoming part of the Brewers’ internal core around general manager and president of baseball operations Matt Arnold.

The Athletics have emphasized improvements in pitching as a key need following a difficult recent season, and the reported fit for Castro is grounded in his long work history in pitching. MLB.com’s report traces that background to earlier work as a throwing trainer at Driveline Baseball in 2016, before he built a multi-year pitching-development pathway inside Milwaukee.

Castro’s experience is particularly relevant to the Athletics’ stated development priorities heading into the next stages of their rebuild. The club is coming off a 64-98 season, and the report characterizes a clear need for improvements in the pitching department, a responsibility that would align directly with Castro’s specialization.

This leadership change also intersects with the Athletics’ stadium timeline. The report places Castro’s pairing with Smith as part of a new chapter in front office leadership as Oakland prepares for its final season playing at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. After that, the team is set to relocate to a new ballpark in Las Vegas, with the new facility expected to be ready for play by Opening Day 2028.

At this time, the reported hiring should be treated as pending confirmation because, per the MLB.com account, the Athletics had not yet made an official announcement. That means readers should look for a club release or another primary Athletics statement to confirm Castro’s title, start date, and any scope of authority as general manager.
