Cole Caufield nets overtime winner as Canadiens rally past Senators in Kraft Hockeyville preseason game

A Kraft Hockeyville preseason game at Colisée Videotron in Trois-Rivières ended with the Montreal Canadiens completing a late rally against the Ottawa Senators, winning 3-2 in overtime. Cole Caufield scored the second of his two goals at 3:19 of extra time to provide Montreal the game-winning finish.

The Canadiens had been coming off a strong result two nights earlier, when Caufield’s goal with 38 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Montreal to a 4-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs in a split-squad game at Bell Centre. On Monday, Montreal’s Jayden Struble also scored, while Samuel Montembeault (seven) and Jakub Dobes combined to make 18 saves for the Canadiens.

For Ottawa, Dylan Cozens recorded a goal and an assist in the preseason opener, and William Eklund scored. Samuel Ersson made 34 saves for the Senators. The game was also Ottawa’s first since the team traded captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on June 22.

Eklund opened the scoring 1:29 into the first period on a feed from Cozens for a 1-0 lead. Struble tied the game 1-1 at 4:43 of the first period, and Cozens restored Ottawa’s lead 2-1 at 19:47 of the second. Caufield then tied the score 2-2 at 11:59 of the third period on a power-play give-and-go with Lane Hutson before scoring again in overtime to close it out.
