Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. has been named the 2026 Heart & Hustle Award winner by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA), a league-linked recognition created to highlight an active player’s passion for baseball and the values of the game. The announcement makes Witt the first player to receive the honour three times since the award was established in 2005.

MLBPAA noted that Witt becomes the first player with three Heart & Hustle titles, following Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, who won in 2006 and 2007 and previously stood as the only two-time winner. With Witt’s latest victory, he now holds the record outright as the first to reach the three-win mark.

The award’s selection process, as described by the MLBPAA, begins with each of the 30 teams naming one nominee through a committee of former players. Fans, alumni and active Major League players then vote to determine the overall winner, linking the award to both club-level nomination and broader baseball community input.

Witt has been Kansas City’s nominee in each of his first five Major League seasons, according to MLB’s account of the award. In 2026, the MLBPAA’s coverage of his season performance placed him among the game’s most productive all-around players, while also emphasizing his impact beyond the field.

In 143 games in 2026, Witt hit .281 with 18 home runs, 33 doubles and 45 stolen bases. MLB’s report also states that his 7.0 fWAR led the American League and ranked second in the Majors, behind the Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong (10.6), and it credited his offensive baseline with a notable streak: he became the first player in Major League history to reach at least 10 home runs and 25 stolen bases in each of his first five seasons.

Defensively, MLB’s report says Witt continued to rank among baseball’s best at shortstop, with his 24 Outs Above Average leading the American League and placing third in the Majors, as measured by Statcast. That combination of run production, base running and defensive value is presented as part of the overall profile MLBPAA associated with the Heart & Hustle Award winner.

The Heart & Hustle Award arrives amid other major postseason award developments for Witt. MLB reports that he was a finalist for the American League Most Valuable Player Award alongside the Astros’ Yordan Alvarez and the Rays’ Junior Caminero, with the winner scheduled to be announced next Thursday on MLB Network.

Witt is also described as a finalist for his third consecutive Silver Slugger Award at shortstop. MLB notes that if he wins again, he would be the first American League shortstop to earn the award in three straight seasons since Derek Jeter won four consecutive Silver Sluggers from 2006 to 2009.

Additionally, Witt was named a Gold Glove Award finalist, after winning the honour in each of the previous two seasons. With MLBPAA’s Heart & Hustle Award now added to that run of recognitions, the latest announcement positions Witt as a central figure across multiple award races as the regular season concludes and winter awards approach.

From a Vancouver fan perspective, the practical takeaway is that Witt’s season profile is already driving conversations in several award categories at once. The next milestone in the timeline is the AL MVP announcement next Thursday, while the Silver Slugger and Gold Glove outcomes would follow through the league’s postseason awards schedule.
