The St. Louis Cardinals announced on Tuesday that they have acquired left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera from the Boston Red Sox in a trade that sends minor league pitcher Juan Carlos García to Boston. The move gives St. Louis a young southpaw with major-league experience, while the Red Sox receive a right-handed prospect who has recently been pitching in the Dominican Summer League Cardinals.

Rivera, 23, is a 6-foot-7, 237-pound left-handed pitcher from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Cardinals said Rivera was originally selected in the 11th round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Oakland Athletics out of C.A.D.E.S.T. (Colegio Acelerado de Educacion Secundaria y Tecnica) in Carolina, Puerto Rico.

According to the Cardinals’ announcement, Rivera made his Major League debut at Fenway Park in Boston on April 22, 2026 against the New York Yankees. In his first two MLB appearances, he threw 7.0 scoreless innings, and he did not allow a hit to a left-handed batter until his fourth major-league appearance, when he yielded a single to Dylan Beavers of the Orioles.

The announcement also said Rivera limited left-handed batters in his time with Boston, allowing just one hit in 15 at-bats (.067 batting average) against lefties. The Cardinals further noted that Rivera has not allowed a home run in his minor league career while facing a total of 355 left-handed batters.

In the 2026 Major League season, Rivera appeared in four games for Boston, including three starts. The Cardinals reported that he went 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA across 10.0 innings, while averaging one strikeout per inning.

Before his arrival in the majors, Rivera worked his way through the Athletics system and later the Red Sox organization. The Cardinals said he began his professional career as an 18-year-old in the Athletics’ Arizona Complex League, advanced to High-A Lansing, and was acquired by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in June 2024.

From there, the Cardinals stated that Rivera ascended through the Red Sox organization with a total of 32 appearances and 22 starts over the next 22 months, culminating in his MLB debut in 2026. Entering the 2026 season, the announcement said Rivera was ranked as the No. 18 prospect in the Red Sox organization by MLB.com.

For 2026 at the minor league level, the Cardinals reported that Rivera made 26 appearances, including five starts, between Portland (AA) and Worcester (AAA). In that span, he posted a 7-2 record with a 2.59 ERA and struck out 71 batters over 55.2 innings.

The Cardinals also provided details about the player moving to Boston. García is an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher from Montemorelos, Mexico, and the announcement said he pitched the last two seasons for the Dominican Summer League Cardinals.

According to the Cardinals, García went 6-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 23 games in the Dominican Summer League Cardinals over that period, completing the exchange for Rivera between St. Louis and Boston.

With the trade completed, St. Louis adds a tall left-hander with a 2026 major-league debut and a full season of minor league work behind him, while Boston receives a young right-handed arm from the Cardinals’ developmental pipeline in García. The Cardinals’ release frames the deal as a swap of minor league depth for a player who has already reached the majors.
