The program, “Destined: The 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks,” is scheduled for Thursday at 8 p.m. ET on MLB Network. The documentary is described by the league as the 50th installment in MLB Network’s “MLB Network Presents” series, which launched in 2015.
MLB Network says the film traces the Diamondbacks’ path from the team’s late-1990s inception to the 2001 season, culminating in a World Series that included a late comeback and a Game 7 finish against the New York Yankees. The league notes that Arizona’s championship included defeating the three-time defending champions Yankees in the bottom of the ninth inning of World Series Game 7, with Mariano Rivera involved as Yankees’ closer in that defining moment.
According to MLB Network, the documentary’s narrative centers on how the 2001 roster came together quickly after the team began play as an expansion franchise in the late 1990s. The league describes the group as veteran-laden and built largely around established players, with emphasis on clubhouse chemistry alongside on-field talent.
MLB Network lead producer Paul Solga said the documentary is “more than the story of the 2001 Diamondbacks’ championship season,” adding that it focuses on what can happen when players commit to a shared goal. Solga framed the project as highlighting how a veteran group—many nearing the ends of their careers—overcame adversity by trusting one another and understanding their roles.
The league says the documentary draws on extensive archival footage and new interviews with key figures across the organization, including former general manager Joe Garagiola Jr., manager Bob Brenly, and players Jay Bell, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Mark Grace, Damian Miller, Reggie Sanders, Matt Williams and Tony Womack. It also includes interviews with co-MVPs Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.
MLB Network reports that the film covers the credibility Johnson brought to the franchise after signing ahead of the 1999 season and the subsequent acquisition of Schilling, which helped shape what the league describes as one of the most dominant postseason pitching tandems in Major League history.
The documentary also includes Schilling discussing the personal scouting notes he kept in the dugout throughout his starts, which MLB Network says provides detail on the team’s preparation. In the film, Schilling is quoted as saying, “When you put the right people in the right room, there is no unachievable goal,” and further that “the 2001 season was the perfect baseball season for that team.”
MLB Network further says “Destined” captures the atmosphere surrounding the 2001 postseason, including the fact that the World Series took place in the immediate aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The league describes the documentary’s scope as reaching beyond the field, revisiting the games at Yankee Stadium, the emotional late-inning heartbreak Arizona suffered in the Bronx, and the resilience required to mount a ninth-inning comeback in Game 7.
Among the highlights MLB Network specifically identifies is the Game 7 finish capped by Gonzalez’s bloop single over a drawn-in infield, as described by the league. The program also incorporates what it calls exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from September, when members of the 2001 team reunited at Chase Field to celebrate the 25th anniversary.
After its premiere, MLB Network says the documentary will re-air at 11:30 p.m. ET / 8:30 p.m. PT on MLB Network. MLB Network coordinating producer Jed Tuminaro said the 2001 Diamondbacks are “a team and a story” that the documentary series is treating as its 50th episode.
The announcement positions the premiere as a scheduled television event tied directly to the anniversary of Arizona’s 2001 championship season, with coverage built around both archival material and new interviews from major figures connected to the team’s front office, dugout and roster.
