Beckett Sennecke had two goals and an assist, and the Anaheim Ducks held off a late rally from the Edmonton Oilers for a 5-4 win at Rogers Place on Thursday.

Anaheim took control in the early portion of the third period, where Sennecke put the Ducks firmly ahead. After Sennecke’s scoring helped Anaheim build a 5-2 advantage early in the third, Edmonton began its comeback attempt with a power-play goal from Kasperi Kapanen with 3:36 remaining.

Leon Draisaitl then narrowed the gap again, scoring with 44 seconds left to make it 5-4. Draisaitl received a cross-crease pass through the seam from Connor McDavid and beat Anaheim goaltender Laurent Brossoit with Matt Tomkins on the bench for the extra attacker, but the Oilers could not score the equalizer on the final possession.

Cutter Gauthier contributed a goal and an assist for the Ducks, including his ninth goal in his past four games. Pavel Mintyukov added two goals and an assist as Anaheim improved to 8-7-1, while also earning a point in four of its past five games.

Brossoit made 23 saves for Anaheim. For Edmonton, McDavid finished with a goal and three assists to extend his season-opening point streak to 17 games, and Evan Bouchard added a goal and an assist as the Oilers fell to 11-3-3; Edmonton’s point streak of five games ended, finishing 3-0-2.

McDavid opened the scoring sequence with a power-play goal, setting the tone early for a matchup that featured multiple special-teams moments. Gauthier scored the Ducks’ first goal at 9:26 of the first period on the power play, taking a pass across the slot from Jackson LaCombe and finishing short side underneath Tomkins’ right arm.

Edmonton responded before the period ended. Bouchard tied the game 1-1 with 19 seconds left in the first period, scoring on a wrist shot from the slot after receiving a pass from behind the net from McDavid.

The Ducks and Oilers then traded goals through the middle frame. McDavid gave Edmonton a 2-1 lead short-handed at 2:34 of the second period, driving in one-on-one against Ducks forward Nikita Nesterenko before taking a shot in the slot and batting his own rebound past Brossoit.

Mintyukov answered for Anaheim, tying the game 2-2 at 3:37 of the second period when his shot deflected in off Mathieu Joseph. He then put the Ducks back in front at 6:15, scoring again to make it 3-2 on a rebound past Tomkins’ blocker after Judd Caulfield created a point-blank chance.

Sennecke continued the Ducks’ push late in the second period, making it 4-2 with 38 seconds remaining. He scored at 1:42 in the third period to extend Anaheim’s lead to 5-2, completing a tic-tac-toe sequence involving passes from Gauthier and Carlsson before firing a one-timer from the right post.

After Draisaitl’s late goal, Edmonton controlled the puck off the ensuing faceoff but was unable to generate the tying score. Tomkins finished with 16 saves for the Oilers as the Ducks protected the one-goal margin and completed the comeback denial.

The result left Anaheim with the win despite Edmonton tightening the contest in the final minute, while Edmonton’s late efforts ended short and their point streak concluded at five games.
