New Jersey Devils add Connor Hellebuyck in blockbuster trade with Winnipeg Jets, league-leading goalie’s arrival draws early excitement
Image accompanying the official NHL announcement.NEWARK, N.J. — The New Jersey Devils’ blockbuster trade for goaltender Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets was met with rapid optimism from within the organization, with Devils players emphasizing how the move changes the team’s goaltending outlook and on-ice identity. Devils center Jack Hughes said the acquisition has created “a lot of noise,” framing it as a statement by the club’s ownership and management that New Jersey is assembling “the pieces” for a realistic chance to contend nightly.
According to the NHL’s reported details of the transaction, New Jersey acquired Hellebuyck on Friday in exchange for forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, the rights to unsigned forward Alexander Command, New Jersey’s second-round pick in the 2029 NHL Draft, and the club’s seventh-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. The package reflects a significant investment for the Devils as they look to add a proven top-tier starter to their roster.
In the immediate aftermath of the trade, New Jersey carried momentum into regular-season play. One day after completing the deal, the Devils finished an unbeaten home stretch by going 3-0-0, including a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. That run sets up New Jersey’s next phase, beginning a three-game road trip at the Dallas Stars on Tuesday and continuing with Hellebuyck’s integration as the team welcomes what the Devils described as one of the league’s premier goalies into the group.
Hughes said the Devils were prepared to handle the increased attention, but what stood out to him was Hellebuyck’s mindset and preparation. The center pointed to Hellebuyck’s mentality, saying the goalie has a focus to be “dialed in” and is driven to “carry the mail” when the team needs him. Hughes also tied that confidence to practical expectations, saying New Jersey may need to rely on Hellebuyck alongside Jake Allen, with both goaltenders part of the team’s planning going forward.
Hellebuyck’s arrival is also grounded in a direct personal connection with Hughes, created at the international level. The two played together for the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics and won the gold medal. Hughes said he has already seen Hellebuyck’s approach under pressure and referenced the shared memory of Hellebuyck making the saves as Hughes scored 1:41 into overtime of a 2-1 win over Canada to secure gold for the Americans, a moment the players now bring to New Jersey.
When asked about the possibility of pursuing a Stanley Cup with a teammate with whom he won Olympic gold, Hughes said he was not focusing on that yet. Instead, he emphasized that his excitement is directed toward the group now that Hellebuyck has joined the roster, and toward working on the team’s game to see where it can go over the season.
Hughes also addressed Hellebuyck’s choice to waive his no-trade protection, which he described as meaningful. He said Hellebuyck’s decision reflects belief in the group, noting that the goalie expressed he is “extremely excited” to join the team and that the Devils are equally eager to have him. Hughes added that the club’s fans are also expected to share that enthusiasm.
Defenceman Brenden Dillon, who played three seasons with Hellebuyck in Winnipeg from 2021 to 2024, offered a more detailed look at the goalie’s day-to-day routine. Dillon characterized Hellebuyck as methodical and confident, describing a strong commitment to process and structure in both the gym and on the ice. Dillon said Hellebuyck also enjoys handling the puck and works to initiate plays from the defensive zone, a factor he said is beneficial for the defence’s ability to transition.
Dillon said he understands the confidence that Hellebuyck’s presence can spread across the roster. He described Hellebuyck as a “rock” who can be difficult to beat, citing the goalie’s competitive style and the way that intensity shows during practices and carries into games.
The trade has also created a personal transition for Dillon as Hellebuyck moves from Winnipeg to New Jersey. Dillon said his own family circumstances and Hellebuyck’s family situation are similar, noting that Dillon’s wife reached out to Hellebuyck’s wife with advice about neighbourhoods and family life, and that he expects the move to be smooth for both households.
Beyond the transition plan, Dillon linked the immediate on-ice benefit to confidence and performance habits, saying New Jersey is “1-0 in the Hellebuyck era” following its early results after the trade. He added that Hellebuyck’s focus is on winning and that he expects the goalie’s presence to make the team better.
Jake Allen, who has started seven of New Jersey’s 11 games in goal, described the impact of adding an NHL MVP as something that is immediately felt around the team. Allen said the team sensed a “buzz” when an elite goalie was acquired, calling New Jersey fortunate to have Hellebuyck join the roster and indicating the club will be prepared to support the new arrangement between both goalies.
Hellebuyck’s profile is built on extensive success in Winnipeg. The goalie played his first 11 NHL seasons with the Jets franchise that began as the Winnipeg Thrashers and is the franchise leader in games played by a goalie (625), starts (615), wins (345), and shutouts (45). He has won the Vezina Trophy three times as NHL goaltender of the year (2019-20, 2023-24, 2024-25) and the Hart Trophy as League MVP once (2024-25), credentials the Devils have now added to their rotation.
In addition to Hughes, Dillon, and Allen, other Devils players also addressed the change. Defenceman Brett Pesce said he has faced Hellebuyck since their college days in Hockey East and described it as “nice” to have him on his side after years of competing against him. Nico Hischier said the move is exciting but also acknowledged the difficulty of the losses on the other side, noting that New Jersey traded away key pieces including Daws and Mercer. Hischier said the club recognizes both the strength the addition brings and the challenge involved in letting players go as the roster reshapes for the season.
