Seth Jarvis skates in noncontact jersey as Carolina Hurricanes recover ahead of shoulder-surgery timeline

Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis participated in the team’s first training camp practice Thursday while wearing a noncontact jersey as he continues recovering from surgery on his right shoulder. Jarvis underwent repairs for a torn labrum and rotator cuff in late June, and the original return window was between late October and December after an expected 4-6 month recovery. In an NHL.com report, Jarvis said, “Last I checked I was a little ahead of schedule,” while also adding that he will continue rehabbing.

NHL.com notes that Jarvis injured the shoulder during the 2023-24 season but played through the issue in the past two seasons, including 71 regular-season games and 19 Stanley Cup Playoff games as Carolina won the Stanley Cup last season. The report also states that Jarvis played five games for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour said the club is not looking to rush Jarvis back and that progress and strength will guide his return. In the same report, Brind’Amour said the team will “not…rush him back,” and that when Jarvis is ready, the organization will integrate him “as soon as we can.”

The Hurricanes’ camp also included lineup questions on defense. Restricted free agent defenseman Alexander Nikishin did not take part in practice, and the team said he is not under contract, meaning he will not attend camp. The report attributes a Wednesday statement to Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky: “Alexander Nikishin is not under contract currently, so he will not be at camp when we hit the ice on Thursday. We won't be commenting further at this time.”

With Nikishin absent, Carolina’s blue-line competition includes returning players Mike Reilly, Joel Nystrom, and Charles Alexis Legault, along with additional depth additions including Juuso Valimaki (signed to a one-year contract) and Pierre-Olivier Joseph (signed to a one-year contract). The Hurricanes open the season against the Florida Panthers at Lenovo Center on Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. ET, according to the report.
