Travis Green signs multi-year deal with Ottawa Senators through 2030–31 season
Image accompanying the official NHL announcement. The Ottawa Senators have signed head coach Travis Green to a multi-year contract that runs through the 2030–31 season, the National Hockey League team announced on Monday. Green, 55, will remain in the organization’s top coaching role as the Senators plan for the long term under the same leadership group established during his first two seasons in Ottawa.
Green was hired as the Senators’ head coach on May 7, 2024. During his first two seasons behind the bench, Ottawa reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each year, giving the organization a postseason foundation early in his tenure. The contract extension signals the Senators’ intent to retain continuity in coaching and team structure as they continue to build their next competitive cycle.
The Senators’ current regular-season performance, as provided in the announcement, includes a record of 6–3–0 over the team’s first nine games this season. The team’s early momentum comes after a major roster move in the offseason: Ottawa traded former captain Brady Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers on June 21. The club will now attempt to sustain its start while adjusting to new line combinations and responsibilities on and off the puck.
As part of the immediate scheduling impact tied to the new deal, Ottawa is set to host the Florida Panthers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET, with broadcast listings provided as Prime and SCRIPPS in the league announcement. The matchup is notable because it follows the earlier Tkachuk trade, meaning the Senators’ new coaching term will be tested quickly against a division opponent that acquired their former captain.
In support of the extension, Ottawa general manager Steve Staois said that when the team was identifying its head coach two years ago, “it was clear to me that Travis had the qualities to move our team forward.” Staois also described watching Green implement “systems and structures” that, according to the general manager, reinforced his belief in Green’s coaching abilities, and Staois added that the organization and Green share a vision and philosophy while aiming to continue building the team.
The Senators also confirmed that several members of Green’s staff signed new contracts on Monday. According to the announcement, assistant coaches Nolan Baumgartner and Ben Sexton, assistant coach Mike Yeo, and goaltending coach Justin Peters all put pen to paper on contract extensions alongside Green.
For Ottawa, retaining both the head coach and members of the supporting bench staff indicates the Senators expect to keep key day-to-day tactical components in place. That matters in-season, particularly early when coaching systems and player roles are still being refined and when the club’s schedule can quickly change the pressure level around results.
The contract keeps Green tied to the Senators through the 2030–31 season, covering multiple future roster cycles rather than a shorter, short-term extension. With the team already posting a winning record in its opening stretch and beginning to navigate the on-ice adjustments that follow the Tkachuk trade, Ottawa’s decision creates stability that can influence both player development and in-game preparation as the season progresses.
