Jeremy Jacobs steps down as NHL Board of Governors chairman; Ted Leonsis chosen to replace him

Boston Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs is stepping down as chairman of the NHL Board of Governors, ending a tenure that began in 2007 and lasted nearly two decades, the NHL announced on Tuesday.

According to the league, Jacobs will be succeeded by Ted Leonsis, a Governor of the Washington Capitals and chairman of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, who was selected unanimously to serve as the next chairman of the Board of Governors. Calgary Flames Governor Murray Edwards will take on the vice-chair role.

In a statement cited by the NHL, Jacobs said serving as chairman has been one of the greatest honors of his life and that, after being elected in 2007, it was time to “pass the torch.” The league also noted Jacobs’s long NHL involvement, including service on the Audit, Finance and Executive Committees since 1979.
