Sam Steel agrees to four-year deal with Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars announced on Monday that forward Sam Steel has signed a four-year, $14.8 million contract. The agreement begins next season and carries an average annual value of $3.7 million, keeping the 28-year-old in Dallas through the term of the deal.

In the announcement, Stars general manager Jim Nill said the organization is “happy to be locking him up for the next four seasons,” citing Steel’s consistency with the club, particularly on the penalty kill, as well as his versatility.

The Stars’ release states that Steel recorded NHL career highs with 12 goals, 21 assists, and 33 points across 73 regular-season games in his most recent season. It also notes that he finished with no points in six Stanley Cup Playoff games last season, during his third campaign with Dallas.

Steel was originally selected by the Anaheim Ducks with the 30th overall pick in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft. The announcement says he has 175 points (61 goals, 114 assists) in 491 regular-season games with the Ducks, Minnesota Wild, and Stars, and added 14 points (three goals, 11 assists) in 48 playoff games.

The Stars’ regular-season opener is scheduled for Oct. 2 at home against the St. Louis Blues, according to the team’s league announcement.
