The City of Vancouver says repairs on the Georgia Viaduct begin Oct. 1 and will include lane reductions, with work extending until spring 2027.
The Story
Drivers heading to downtown Vancouver via the Georgia Viaduct are being told to plan for delays starting Oct. 1, when the City of Vancouver begins repair work on the structure.
The City says the repairs include replacing expansion joints on the Georgia Viaduct deck and ramps, and that the work will continue until spring 2027.
Beginning Friday, Oct. 1 at 2 p.m., the vehicle exit ramp from the Georgia Viaduct to Main Street will close for roughly three months.
The City says drivers should expect reduced lanes and potential delays while work is under way. Pedestrians may also see the Georgia Viaduct sidewalk closed for an extended period and are directed to use the sidewalk on the adjacent Dunsmuir Viaduct.
For cyclists, the City says the bike lane on the Dunsmuir Viaduct will not be impacted. It also warns to expect short-term lane closures on Pacific Boulevard below the viaduct and to follow signage in the area during the work.
The City says the Dunsmuir Viaduct will remain open to westbound vehicle traffic, including pedestrians and cyclists travelling in both directions.
While crews carry out the repairs, the City says the timeline for the future of the Georgia and Dunsmuir viaducts is “still uncertain,” adding it plans to eventually replace them with “an at-grade street network as part of the Northeast False Creek Plan.”
