VPD charges man after alleged assault on tourists near Gastown; suspect to remain in custody

Vancouver Police have charged a 34-year-old man after an alleged assault on two tourists near Gastown on Oct. 21.

The Story

A 34-year-old man is in custody after Vancouver Police allege he assaulted two tourists near Gastown.

Police said officers on routine patrol witnessed an altercation between the suspect and two people near Abbott and West Cordova streets at about 11:00 p.m. on Oct. 21.

Officers intervened and safely handcuffed the suspect.

The two victims were tourists from Calgary walking back from the Bruno Mars concert, police said.

Police alleged the suspect punched the male victim on the arm with a sharp object, believed to be glass, and the force of the contact pushed the female victim into a nearby light pole.

Police said the male victim sustained a cut to his left forearm and was treated at the scene by Emergency Health Services.

Police identified the suspect as Derek Dale Driscoll and said he had two outstanding warrants: one related to an alleged breach of probation and one for failing to attend court.

Police said Driscoll was arrested, transported to jail, and has now been charged with assault, assault causing bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.

He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing, police said.
