Chris Murphy discharged from hospital after stroke and will recover at rehabilitation facility

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy says he has been discharged after suffering a stroke and will miss several weeks of Senate votes while recovering in rehab.

The Story

Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy says he has been discharged from hospital after suffering a stroke last weekend and will recover at a rehabilitation facility.

Murphy, 53, said in a statement that doctors are “very encouraged by the progress I’ve made so far,” and that his stay at the rehabilitation centre is expected to get him back to work on the quickest timeline possible. He said he will miss “several weeks” of votes in the Senate as he recovers.

Murphy said doctors diagnosed him with a small hemorrhagic stroke, describing it as a bleed in the brain. He said he called 911 on Oct. 31 out of an abundance of caution after feeling that “something was not right” with his body.

In the statement released with the update on his condition, Dr. Jose Suarez, chief of neurosciences critical care at Johns Hopkins Hospital, said Murphy has shown tremendous progress and that “we expect that he will make a full recovery following rehabilitation.”

Murphy said he has been staying engaged with his team and colleagues remotely so his office’s work continues. “I want to extend my deepest thanks to the excellent doctors and staff at Johns Hopkins who have treated me and cared for my family,” he said.

Murphy said he and his family are appreciative of continued respect for their privacy. The update comes after he had been travelling to support House and Senate candidates ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections, which secured a majority for his party.
