The federal government says it has promised $1 billion for a Centre for Mental Health and Addictions and supportive housing in Winnipeg.
The Story
The federal government has pledged $1 billion toward a Centre for Mental Health and Addictions and supportive housing in Winnipeg as part of a partnership with Manitoba “to create the conditions to end homelessness” in the city.
The government says $200 million would support construction of the centre, while up to $800 million would be directed to 2,000 new housing units.
Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham described the funding as “a once-in-a-generation investment” and said it would be a “big step” toward addressing “some of the city’s biggest challenges.”
The federal government said the Winnipeg centre would follow the model already being used at the Dunn House supportive housing initiative in Toronto.
