Unifor to hold vote Oct. 17–18 on whether Stellantis workers can authorize a strike

Unifor says it will hold a strike-authorization vote Oct. 17 and 18 for more than 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada.

The Story

Unifor, the union representing more than 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada, says it will hold a vote on Oct. 17 and 18 on whether workers want to authorize their bargaining committee to call a strike if negotiations later break down.

The union said a strike authorization vote does not automatically mean workers would walk off the job. Unifor said it is moving toward the vote because the bargaining committee and the company are at an impasse over issues it described as key, including job security and the future of Stellantis’s Brampton, Ont., assembly plant, which the company wants to sell.

Unifor said it expects to announce the results of the strike vote on Oct. 19.

Unifor and Stellantis began bargaining in early September, including a Sept. 1, 2026 meeting in Toronto where Stellantis Canada president and CEO Trevor Longley and Unifor National President Lana Payne exchanged a negotiation binder to open talks.
