Vancouver Police say that in a month-long awareness campaign, 920 of 1,275 e-scooter riders stopped were not wearing helmets.
The Story
Vancouver Police say they’ve issued hundreds of tickets during a month-long e-scooter safety awareness campaign that began just before Labour Day, following concerns about injuries involving e-scooters.
Insp. Stephanie Willoughby said officers stopped 1,275 riders during the initiative and found that 920 were not wearing helmets.
The Vancouver Police Department said the tickets issued during the span covered a range of infractions, including underaged riders, riding on sidewalks, and multiple riders on a scooter at the same time.
Willoughby said the fine for not wearing a helmet is $29, adding that the average fine amount is $109.
The VPD said it started the initiative after seeing a serious injury sustained by a rider over the summer and after a fatality.
Police also pointed to a Canadian Institute for Health and Information report indicating a 40 per cent increase in e-scooter related hospitalizations across Canada for both children and adults between 2025 and 2026.
Vancouver creator Everest Hughes, who posts under the alias “Limescootboyz,” said he has been gaining social media traction for stunt videos on lime scooters and that he is trying to be more mindful about e-scooter safety and what he shares.
Hughes said he does not want others to copy his videos, and he urged riders to be careful, including when riding in wet conditions.
The VPD reminded the public that riders should never use e-scooters on sidewalks, should always wear a helmet, and must obey the 25 km/h e-scooter speed limit.
