Premier David Eby announced a regulatory plan aimed at capping profits in the grocery sector and said “Don’t worry about Save-On-Foods” in remarks on Monday.
The Story
Premier David Eby announced a new plan to cap profits of large grocery companies and said his government will investigate price hikes on some staples and bar increases that cannot be explained.
In remarks delivered standing in front of a Save-On Foods store, Eby referred to Jimmy Pattison and said, “Don’t worry about Save-On-Foods. Don’t worry about Jimmy. He’ll be OK — he’s going to land on his feet.”
Eby said his government has launched programs to counter retail violence, and he referred to meeting Save-On Foods chief executive Jamie Nelson to discuss the issue.
The Save-On Foods company founder and owner of the Jim Pattison Group, which owns Save-On Foods, was also linked in Eby’s announcement to the grocery profit crackdown.
Eby also announced a tax-related package on the weekend, including proposed changes affecting people in the top income brackets—those earning over $190,000 a year—and a new higher tax rate for people earning over $1 million a year, along with a higher tax on vacant condo properties that had been announced earlier in the campaign.
On Monday, Eby said seven health projects that were “re-paced” in February’s budget would be restarted, and that a new project would be added.
Eby said he would provide $90 million for the long-dormant Oak Bay Lodge rebuild in Victoria and that the earlier re-spacing was tied to projected costs rising to as much as $1.8 million per bed.
He said Monday that standardizing plans drove prices down and made the restart possible.
