Brian White has scored in four straight MLS matches and leads Vancouver with 17 goals as the Whitecaps begin a five-match road trip in Chicago.
The Story
The Vancouver Whitecaps will begin a five-match road trip Tuesday night in Chicago, with striker Brian White continuing to drive their attack.
White has scored in four consecutive MLS matches and has 17 MLS goals this season, putting him third in the MLS Golden Boot race behind Lionel Messi (21) and FC Dallas’ Petar Musa (18). White’s 17 goals account for 28.8 per cent of Vancouver’s MLS goals, and he has reached the total on 39 shots on target, for a 43.5 per cent shooting percentage on target.
White’s most productive MLS season to date has included seven goals in his last seven MLS matches as the campaign enters its final stretch. Vancouver also ranks near the top of the league offensively, sitting second in MLS with 59 goals scored from 15 different players, while White leads MLS with an expected-goals (xG) rate of 16.53.
The Whitecaps’ season success has been reflected in White’s availability as well. After being limited to 21 MLS appearances last season due to two hamstring injuries, White has played in 24 of 26 regular-season matches this season.
Vancouver will also lean on White’s style as a “classic No. 9,” with his goals coming from a range of in-box situations such as headers, rebounds, failed clearances, and give-and-goes. White has said reaching 100 personal MLS-era goals would be “a big deal,” describing it as the result of years of work supported by teammates and game plans.
White is 30 years old and was acquired by Vancouver in a trade on June 2, 2021. He has 97 goals across all competitions with the Whitecaps since joining the club, and trails Domenic Mobilio for the most franchise MLS-era goals; Mobilio finished with 170.
The Whitecaps will travel without several players for the match at Soldier Field in Chicago. Jeevan Badwal, Kenji Cabrera and Belal Halbouni are out with injuries, while Andres Cubas, Ralph Priso, Edier Ocampo and Mihail Gherasimencov are away on international duty.
Following the trip to Chicago, Vancouver’s road schedule continues with matches at LAFC, St. Louis, Austin FC and Colorado before the team returns home to play San Diego on Wednesday, October 28.
