Richmond school trustee candidate Kiana Dashtbazi highlights basics, social issues and SOGI support

Kiana Dashtbazi, an independent school trustee candidate in Richmond, said she is running to support every child and provided yes/no answers to a slate of campaign questions.

The Story

Kiana Dashtbazi is running for school trustee in Richmond as an independent candidate, according to a questionnaire response published as part of an online series running from Sept. 28 to Oct. 8.

Dashtbazi lists her home neighbourhood as Steveston & No. 2 Road and her profession as a noon-hour supervisor. She said her favourite leisure activities include spending time with her kids, taking fitness classes and reading.

In response to the question of why she is running, Dashtbazi said her motto is “Seeing Every Child, Supporting Every Mind.” She described running while “navigating the local school system with my neurodivergent child,” adding that she has experience on Richmond school grounds as a noon supervisor.

Dashtbazi also said she has an architecture background and has worked at the Centre for Family Equity, describing that experience as helping “lift up voices that are too often ignored.” She said she is seeking a school community rooted in “deep empathy, true inclusion, and unwavering support.”

On the questionnaire’s yes/no questions, Dashtbazi answered “No” to teaching more basics such as reading and math, and “No” to whether curriculum should focus more on trades training. She answered “No” to whether there is enough focus on social issues in the curriculum.

She did answer “Yes” to whether students should be taught drug awareness in high school, whether elementary track meets should be more inclusive, whether students should have more outdoor education opportunities, whether artificial intelligence should be banned in schools, whether cellphones should be banned in Richmond schools, and whether there should be more educational support workers in schools.

Dashtbazi also answered “Yes” to whether she supports SOGI policies in Richmond schools. For some questions, she did not provide an answer, including whether school districts should be allowed to set school tax rates and whether teachers are adequately paid.
