A new Granville Street café near Waterfront Station is leaning into warehouse-style design and a menu organized by how customers feel, including a viral sweet corn matcha.
The Story
Unscripted Coffee has opened steps from Waterfront Station at 451 Granville St., bringing a matcha-forward drink program and a distinctive approach to how items are organized on the menu.
The café is a new venture from sisters Angel (17) and Sara Dee (23), who describe themselves online as matcha enthusiasts. According to the report, the concept has generated significant attention in the online matcha community before opening.
A visit on Tuesday evening found the location still busy about an hour before closing, suggesting steady interest from nearby commuters and diners even shortly after launch.
The storefront presentation and interior details are described as intentionally scrappy, with tables made from stacked milk crates and a menu that relies on handwritten-style sticky notes. The overall look is tied to a warehouse-inspired theme.
Instead of separating listings in a conventional coffee-and-tea format, the menu divides beverages into categories that respond to customer energy levels. Espresso-based drinks appear under a section for people described as “super tired,” while chai and matcha are grouped under “kinda tired.”
Other drink categories reflect different moods and needs: slushies and kombucha fall under “needs to chill out,” while featured items appear under “is feeling crazy!” The structure is aimed at helping guests quickly find options based on how they want to feel.
One of Unscripted Coffee’s highlighted items, the Sweet Corn Matcha, was sold out by the time the reviewer arrived at 5 p.m. at the Tuesday visit, but other options remained available.
Among the drinks still listed at that time were an Iced Banana Bread Latte, offered with espresso or matcha, and a Calamansi Espresso Spritz. The menu also includes baked goods, including sourdough croissants supplied by Freya’s, a bakery based in Campbell River, along with other items from To Live For Bakery.
For a matcha order, the reviewer chose a Black Sesame Matcha, described as a matcha latte topped with a black sesame cold foam. The drink can be customized for sweetness level, and staff recommended trying it at 40 per cent, which the visitor did.
The report notes that the final drink wasn’t overly sweet and that the matcha flavour was pronounced, with the cold foam providing an additional layer. Overall, it frames Unscripted Coffee as a differentiated option in a dense downtown café area, citing both its visual style and its curated offerings.
The article also highlights that the café is likely to draw repeat visits, with the Sweet Corn Matcha mentioned as a future target if it returns in stock, along with any other new drinks the team develops.
