Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed astronaut Jeremy Hansen as a special adviser on space, to advise both Carney and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly.
The Story
Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen as a special adviser on space, according to a social media post from Hansen.
Hansen said he hopes to build on Canada’s strengths in the field and find new ways to harness opportunities, adding that the role involves advising Carney and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly.
Joly said Hansen proposed helping the government craft a new space strategy, which she said will look to expand industrial innovation and get more Canadians into space.
Hansen previously travelled around the moon and further out into space than any humans before them in April as part of the Artemis II mission with three other astronauts.
The appointment comes as Canada looks to expand space cooperation with European countries and as the United States warns it can seek partners other than Canada for its space missions.
