Eby’s BC NDP proposes new top income tax bracket and higher rates for earners over $190,405

Premier David Eby says the BC NDP’s proposal would increase provincial income tax rates for top earners and is estimated to generate $1 billion per year in new revenue if implemented in the 2027 tax year.

The Story

Premier David Eby announced a BC NDP proposal that would increase provincial income tax rates for taxable incomes starting at $190,405 and add a new bracket for annual taxable income above $1 million.

Eby said the plan would begin in the 2027 tax year if the BC NDP is re-elected in the provincial general election scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, 2026.

The BC NDP estimates its changes would affect 3.88 per cent of B.C. income earners, while more than 96 per cent would see no increase under the proposal.

Under the plan, the existing top two income tax brackets would increase by two percentage points, and a new bracket would be introduced for incomes over $1 million.

For incomes between $190,405 and $265,545, Eby’s proposal would raise the B.C. income tax rate from 16.8 per cent to 18.8 per cent.

For incomes between $265,545 and $1 million, the proposed rate would increase from 20.5 per cent to 22.5 per cent.

For those earning over $1 million, the new tax bracket would set the provincial income tax rate at 24.5 per cent.

Eby said: “We want everyone to prosper in British Columbia. We celebrate when families and businesses here are successful,” adding: “But when people are struggling, we think that it’s fair to ask those at the top to pitch in a bit more so we can make it possible for everyone to get ahead.”
