Lando Norris wins rainy Sao Paulo GP as Mercedes clinches F1 constructors’ title at Interlagos

Lando Norris won the rainy Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos on Sunday, while Mercedes clinched the Formula 1 constructors’ title for the ninth time.

The Story

Lando Norris of McLaren won the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos on Sunday from pole position in a race held in rainy conditions.

Norris led for 47 of 71 laps, earning his second consecutive Brazil victory after briefly losing the lead to new F1 drivers’ champion Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli spun and Norris regained the front, then held on ahead of Max Verstappen.

Verstappen finished second after starting 21st and receiving penalties for changes in his power unit.

The Red Bull of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar completed the podium, with Antonelli finishing fifth, one position behind his teammate George Russell.

Mercedes secured the constructors’ title with its results more than enough even with the rival Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc.

The constructors’ championship is Mercedes’ first since 2021, with the team finishing with 652 points against Ferrari’s 512 and no longer being catchable.

Hamilton, who became the second F1 driver to reach 400 starts after Fernando Alonso, started from the back after changes to his car and finished ninth.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said, “It was a very strong beginning of the season that got us over the line,” adding, “I never thought this was ever possible.”
