Statistics Canada says annual inflation climbed to 3.1% in September, driven largely by higher gasoline prices.
The Story
Statistics Canada says the annual pace of inflation rose to 3.1% in September.
The agency said the increase was led by a 27.8% spike in gasoline prices last month compared with the same month a year earlier, even with the move to the less expensive winter gas blend.
Statistics Canada also reported that, excluding gasoline, consumer prices rose 2.2% year over year in September.
Fuel costs were another major driver, with the agency saying fuel oil and other fuels increased 57.8% in September. It noted that this is especially challenging for Atlantic Canada households that rely on oil heat.
On groceries, Statistics Canada said prices increased 1.7% in September, the smallest year-over-year increase since May 2024. The agency added that grocery prices have risen 33% since September 2020.
