Vancouver school support workers vote nearly 97% in favour of authorizing strike action

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 says its members voted nearly 97% in favour of authorizing strike action in its labour dispute with the Vancouver School Board.

The Story

The International Union of Operating Engineers Local 963 says support staff at Vancouver’s public schools voted over the weekend and returned a ballot of almost 97 per cent in favour of authorizing strike action in a labour dispute with the Vancouver School Board.

In a statement, union business manager Tim De Vivo said the union could serve 72-hour strike notice at any time, but is urging the school board to resume talks.

The union says workers have been asked to accept concessions that would affect “existing working conditions” and job security. It adds that negotiations stalled in September after the board declined to discuss a counter offer from the workers.

The union represents about 900 support staff, including building engineers, custodians, chefs and bakers, culinary assistants, food service workers and supervision aides, among others.
