The Yaletown Business Improvement Association has installed oversized spider decorations at Helmcken Plaza in Downtown Vancouver this week.
The Story
Large, long-legged spider decorations have been installed in the in-street public plaza at Helmcken Plaza in Downtown Vancouver’s Yaletown district, with the display covering part of the pedestrian space ahead of Halloween 2026.
The Yaletown Business Improvement Association installed the decorations this week, about a full month before Halloween 2026.
Oversized arachnids hang from cables and strings of lights that criss-cross the plaza, creating a canopy above the colourful FIFA World Cup mural pavement, picnic tables and umbrellas.
More spiders are also shown clinging to nearby railings, while some are tucked beneath the table umbrellas, positioned so people sitting below can see them when they look up.
Helmcken Plaza is a short, vehicle-free segment of Helmcken Street between Hamilton and Mainland streets, located near Analog Coffee, Earl’s Restaurant and Yaletown Brewery and close to SkyTrain’s Yaletown-Roundhouse Station.
The plaza was permanently closed a few years ago to create a pedestrian-oriented space and is regularly activated by the local business improvement association with seasonal changes to its public art installation.
