Samoskevich breaks tie at 14:35 as Kraken rally for 5-3 win over Utah Mammoth

Mackie Samoskevich broke the 3-3 tie at 14:35 of the third period as the Seattle Kraken beat the Utah Mammoth 5-3 at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday.

The Story

The Seattle Kraken recovered after blowing a two-goal lead in the third period to beat the Utah Mammoth 5-3 at Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday, with Mackie Samoskevich scoring the go-ahead goal at 14:35 of the third.

Utah had battled back to tie the game 3-3 on two goals from Logan Cooley. After a race for a loose puck near the top of the crease, Bobby McMann found Samoskevich cutting to the bottom of the left circle, and Samoskevich one-timed it into an open net to put Seattle ahead 4-3.

Jordan Eberle and Brandon Montour each had a goal and an assist for the Kraken, and Matty Beniers also scored. Philipp Grubauer made 33 saves as Seattle won their first two games of a four-game homestand.

The Kraken had also won after surrendering a multigoal third-period lead in their previous game, topping the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday. “If you want to look at it from a positive standpoint, we're getting into a position where we're able to give up a multigoal lead and still win,” Kraken coach Lane Lambert said.

For the Mammoth, Vincent Trocheck scored and Mikhail Sergachev had two assists. Karel Vejmelka stopped 18 shots. Utah coach Andre Tourigny said the result was “a frustrating night,” adding the team did “a lot of good stuff offensively” but “forced the play too much.”

Seattle took a 1-0 lead at 3:38 of the first when Eberle’s shot from the top of the right circle was deflected by Vejmelka and trickled into the net. Trocheck tied it 1-1 at 17:57 with a power-play goal, and Beniers gave the Kraken a 2-1 lead at 18:23 on another power-play marker. Montour extended Seattle’s advantage to 3-1 at 2:23 of the second on a 5-on-3 power play.

Cooley cut the deficit to 3-2 with a power-play goal 27 seconds into the third period, then tied the game 3-3 at 7:42 with his second goal of the period at even strength. A potential equalizer by Yamamoto was overturned after video review confirmed the play was offside.

After Samoskevich made it 4-3, Freddy Gaudreau scored an empty-net goal at 19:00 to set the final at 5-3.

NOTES: Montour has eight points this season (two goals, six assists) in 10 games and has recorded at least eight points through 10 games in three straight seasons. Utah leads the NHL with 15 power-play goals this season. Catton joined Beniers as the second Kraken player age 20 or younger to record an assist in three consecutive games.
