Students and community members gathered at the University of British Columbia on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2026, for Orange Shirt Day to remember children affected by residential schools and urge reconciliation.
The Story
Students and community members gathered at the University of British Columbia on Wednesday for Orange Shirt Day, an event focused on remembering children who were taken from their families and forced into residential schools, and on honouring loved ones who never made it home.
Organizers also said the day looks forward to the future and encourages the next generation to understand reconciliation.
UBC student Catriona Mackenzie said her hope is that Canadians take reconciliation and implement it into their work, education and everyday lives.
“My hope is that all Canadians will take Reconciliation and implement it into their work and their education and their personal daily lives,” Mackenzie said.
Mackenzie said the turnout for Orange Shirt Day gives her hope.
“It makes me very heart-warmed to see that people are bringing their children and trying to continue this education onto them in the next generation moving forward, and for us to remember that Reconciliation isn’t something that we just do one day a year,” she said.
