Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada can’t achieve federal goals if it is divided, a week before Albertans vote on Oct. 19 on whether to stay in Canada or pursue separation.
The Story
A week ahead of Alberta’s separation referendum, Prime Minister Mark Carney used his Thanksgiving Day message to urge Canadians to remain together, saying the country is “worth fighting for.”
Carney said the federal government is building “big things” in Alberta, including a new pipeline to the West Coast, but he argued those goals can’t be achieved if the country is divided.
In the message, Carney also said Canada must be strong as it faces threats to its economy, security and culture, adding that Canadians are “stronger together.”
Albertans are scheduled to vote on Oct. 19 on whether the province should stay in Canada or hold a second, binding separation referendum.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is scheduled to speak in Calgary on Friday, urging the province to stay within Canada.
