The Solitaire Hotel plans to reopen the Alexander Residence at 58 Alexander St. as a 30-room hotel in December.
The Story
The former Alexander Residence at 58 Alexander St. in Vancouver’s Gastown is being brought back as a hotel, with plans to open in December under the name the Solitaire Hotel, according to information circulated by the hotel and city documentation.
The building originally opened as a hotel in 1912, and more than 60 years later was converted into non-market housing as part of the city’s affordable housing inventory as a single-room occupancy (SRO).
The hotel’s materials describe a renovation that keeps original features while adding modern amenities. “We have brought it back room by room, with original radiators, wood detailing and tall windows over the street, mixed with the best modern-day perks: wireless chargers, smart TVs, hot showers, great beds and playfully curated minibars,” reads text attributed to the Solitaire Hotel’s website.
City documents indicate the new hotel will have 30 rooms and will use self check-in, with no front desk. The documents also state that a 24-hour online helpline will be available; if in-person assistance is required during business hours, an assistant will be dispatched, and after hours an on-call assistant will be available.
Steven Lippman, described in the documents as the director of the hotel’s company, is named as the contact on the materials.
The Solitaire Hotel is expected to be one of only two hotels in Gastown, following the Block hotel, which opened earlier this year.
The Alexander Residence was sold by the City of Vancouver recently for $3 million.
