Mark Critch mocks U.S. podcasters over complaints about Newfoundland-set Netflix thriller Below

Comedian Mark Critch responded on “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” to U.S. commentator Matt Walsh’s complaints about the Newfoundland accents in Netflix’s thriller “Below.”

The Story

Newfoundland comedian Mark Critch had a chuckle this week at the expense of U.S. right-wing podcasters and commentators who have complained about the Newfoundland-set Netflix thriller “Below.”

On Tuesday’s “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” Critch mocked Matt Walsh’s claims that the show’s Newfoundland accents are “the ugliest of all time,” including Walsh’s comments in a recent YouTube video that people with the accent should not speak on camera.

Critch, who is from Newfoundland, said the clip “Oh no, I gotta quit me job!” while using an accent, and then called Walsh an “arsehole.”

Critch also addressed Walsh’s 32-minute video posted last week, in which Walsh walked viewers through the show’s plot and criticized it as “woke slop,” characterizing the show’s sea monster as a “single mom” and “feminist icon.”

In his “22 Minutes” segment, Critch said: “Oh, so Matt Walsh doesn't hate Newfoundlanders. He hates women,” as he responded to Walsh’s criticisms.

The “Below” series stars Josh Hartnett as a fisherman whose Newfoundland town is attacked by a sea creature, and it was shot in eastern Newfoundland. As of last week, “Below” was Netflix’s most-watched English title.

Critch’s segment also roasted U.S. commentator Ben Shapiro, who recently complained in a video that “Below” is “go-woke slop” in part because of its messaging about climate change.

Critch has been on “This Hour Has 22 Minutes” since 2003, and he also co-created and stars in the comedy “Son of a Critch,” based on his childhood in St. John’s, N.L.
