Andreas Almgren won his debut New York City Marathon in 2:06:01, while Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race in 2:24:36.

The Story

Andreas Almgren of Sweden won the men’s race of the New York City Marathon in his debut Sunday, pulling away from Yemaneberhan Crippa of Italy in the final mile to finish in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second.

Crippa finished 13 seconds behind Almgren, with Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho third, edging out defending champion Benson Kipruto.

Almgren’s win came in his first marathon at 26.2 miles after a career focused on half-marathons.

In the women’s race, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won for the second time, also winning the event in 2024, finishing in 2:24:36 after pulling away from fellow runner Hellen Obiri in the final 150 meters.

American Jessica McClain finished second, passing Obiri in the final few strides, with McClain coming 6 seconds behind Chepkirui.

AP reported it was the first time a U.S. woman finished in the top three since 2018.

The race marked the 50th time the New York City Marathon has run through all five boroughs, with just over 2,000 competitors in 1976 including 88 women, and nearly 60,000 runners starting Sunday with nearly half of them women.
