The federal government has introduced legislation to extend its “gas tax pause” for several more months, pushing the end date to the end of January 2027, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced Monday.
Champagne introduced the bill ahead of what the government said will be the first significant debate on the measure. He said the extension would provide relief for farmers, families and truckers.
The pause temporarily suspends the federal 10-cent-per-litre excise tax on gasoline. The measure was initially put in place after the Liberals suspended the tax on April 14, following the United States’ war on Iran that the government linked to global fuel price spikes.
Under the current plan described with the legislation, the pause would run until the end of January. After that, the federal excise tax would be set at five cents per litre until the end of March.
The Conservatives have argued for a longer extension than the government’s proposal and have also called on the government to remove the GST on gas purchases, outlining a different approach to fuel-cost relief.
