B.C. Health Minister Ravi Kahlon has announced he will not run in the province’s Oct. 24 election, becoming the third David Eby cabinet minister to step away from re-election.
The Story
B.C. Health Minister Ravi Kahlon says he will not seek re-election in the upcoming provincial election scheduled for Oct. 24.
In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Kahlon said he believes it is the right time “for the next champion of North Delta to step forward and carry this work on,” indicating the decision is tied to making way for a successor in the Delta-area constituency.
Kahlon’s announcement makes him the third minister in Premier David Eby’s cabinet to declare they will not be running for re-election. The other two ministers who previously announced they would step aside were Kelly Greene and Lana Popham.
Greene said in a statement she remains deeply concerned about the risks posed by the NDP-backed Tilbury LNG facility in waterways in and around her riding of Richmond-Steveston, while Popham said she was sad to leave her role but looks forward to contributing in other ways.
The snap election was called by Premier David Eby for Oct. 24, one week after the Oct. 17 municipal election, as the B.C. NDP begins a new campaign while also managing leadership and candidate decisions within its current cabinet.
