Ottawa City Council is reportedly set to consider renaming a residential street named Trump Avenue after the U.S. president more than 20 years ago.

Ottawa City Council is expected to vote on a proposal to rename Trump Avenue, a residential street in the city’s Central Park neighbourhood that carries the name of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The motion was introduced by River Ward Councillor Riley Brockington and seeks council approval for a name change, though a replacement name has not yet been announced. Brockington said that if the motion is approved, he would lead a public consultation so residents can weigh in on what the street should be called instead.
The street was named more than 20 years ago, linking the local address to Trump’s name long before he took office as U.S. president.
The proposal comes amid renewed attention to Trump-related naming controversies. The motion follows reports that weeks earlier Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America,” a change that has not been widely adopted.
Brockington’s motion is also part of a broader pattern of Ottawa street names referencing New York City, with other Central Park neighbourhood streets including Madison Park, Manhattan Crescent and Staten Street.
Public discussion around what should replace Trump Avenue has already produced competing ideas online, ranging from suggestions that would make a political point to proposals aimed at reflecting local geography and cultural references. However, any final decision would depend on the outcome of the council vote and subsequent consultation with residents.
