Seattle left Adrian Martinez on the practice squad and elevated Bobby Hart and Montorie Foster Jr. ahead of Sunday’s game against Arizona.
The Story
The Seattle Seahawks will enter Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals with Drew Lock as the starter after managing his throwing elbow through the week, with Jalen Milroe remaining the first quarterback off the bench.
Seattle also kept Adrian Martinez on the practice squad, leaving Milroe as the team’s only backup quarterback behind Lock for the matchup. The team made a further set of roster adjustments before the game, including practice-squad elevations for tackle Bobby Hart and receiver Montorie Foster Jr., and filling an open spot on the 53-man roster with defensive tackle Deven Eastern.
The QB situation was shaped by injuries to Seattle’s other options. Sam Darnold is ruled out, which has moved Lock from Seattle’s emergency third quarterback role into the starting lineup. Lock had been limited in practice all week but said Thursday his elbow was improving and that he expected to handle a normal week, and he received no game designation on Friday.
Alongside the QB changes, Seattle’s offensive line plan also shifted. The Seahawks have Josh Jones set to start at left tackle with Charles Cross out, and Quenton Nelson was ruled out with a knee injury.
Seattle’s approach to roster depth reflects the NFL’s emergency quarterback rule. Under the rule, a team can dress a third quarterback from its 53-man roster without using a game-day active spot, and that player can enter if both active quarterbacks are sidelined by injury or disqualification. The Seahawks’ decision to keep Martinez on the practice squad rather than designating him for emergency-quarterback status means Seattle would need a different player to take snaps if both Lock and Milroe were forced out.
Lock previously threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns in Seattle’s 31-7 Week 2 win over Arizona, a game in which Lock and Milroe were both available while Darnold sat. This time, Lock’s elbow affected how Seattle divided practice reps during the week, with Milroe taking extra work as the Seahawks managed Lock’s workload.
