Police in Delta, B.C., say a pickup involved in a crash outside Tsawwassen Mills killed two elders and injured two others during a walk marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The Story
Police in Delta, B.C., are investigating a crash outside the Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre in which two elders were killed and two other people were injured on Wednesday.
Community members on the Tsawwassen First Nation gathered near the shopping centre south of Vancouver, lining the road as the bodies of the two elders were loaded into coroners’ vehicles outside the mall.
According to police, it is believed the driver of the pickup had a medical emergency near one of the mall’s entrances before driving into a group.
The victims were taking part in a walk to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation when the crash happened.
The Provincial Health Services Authority said it sent 12 ground ambulances and two helicopters to respond to the crash.
Police spent much of the day with witnesses and nation members at a restaurant on site, where the black pickup came to rest against a brick wall.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences on social media to those who lost loved ones and to those injured, saying the accident happened on a day already heavy with grievance.
