Measles case reported in Montreal after child was at Trudeau airport and Sainte-Justine

Montreal’s public health authority says a child with measles was at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport late Friday and at Sainte-Justine Hospital early Saturday while still contagious.

The Story

Montreal’s public health authority has reported a new measles case involving a child who was contagious while in the city.

The health authority said the child was at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport late Friday and was at Sainte-Justine Hospital early on Saturday, still able to spread the disease.

Officials said people who may have had contact with the child should monitor themselves for symptoms and seek preventive treatment if they are not vaccinated.

Quebec’s most recent measles outbreak ended in August after 28 reported cases.

Federal measles data shows 1,121 cases have been reported in Canada this year as of Sept. 26.

In November 2025, Canada lost its measles-free status, which it had held since 1998, after the Pan American Health Organization revoked it when confirming the same strain had been transmitted in Canada for more than a year.

The health authority noted that measles is extremely contagious and can cause serious complications, including blindness, encephalitis, pneumonia and, in some cases, death. Common symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose and a rash that begins on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
