Vancouver police say a man’s cigarette ignited gas vapour inside a car’s cabin in Vancouver’s Chinatown at about 11:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The Story
A car caught fire in Vancouver’s Chinatown neighbourhood around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, and Vancouver Police Department officers say the blaze was triggered by gas vapour inside the car’s cabin.
Police said the man had been storing multiple jerry cans filled with gas in the vehicle, and that he lit a cigarette. They said the vapour quickly ignited, engulfing the car.
The 38-year-old man was able to get out of his car with minor burns, and BC Emergency Health Services transported him to hospital.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services investigated the incident, and the fire was deemed accidental. Police said two nearby cars were also damaged by the flames.
