Black bear killed after entering Lonsdale and First Avenue in North Vancouver

The Squamish Nation says RCMP killed a black bear in North Vancouver after it was found on Lonsdale and First Avenue.

The Story

The Squamish Nation says it was notified by the North Vancouver RCMP about the death of a black bear early Tuesday morning.

The organization said the bear had made its way to Lonsdale and First Avenue before it was killed by RCMP.

The Squamish Nation said its Rights and Title team took over to care for the bear in their cultural ways, after RCMP notified the team.

The Squamish Nation also said the communication and access to the bear aligned with its expectations for how other agencies deal with wildlife.

It said the bear had been seen eating from garbage and green-waste bins in the area and did not show fear when residents and officers approached.

The Squamish Nation noted the community has observed more black bears in the area than usual this year, and it said BC Conservation Officer Services reminded the public to be bear aware as bears prepare for hibernation.
