The East Vancouver café Le Marché St. George says an outdoor table was stolen while it was closed for Truth and Reconciliation Day and posted that it is “one less table” in a small space.
The Story
Le Marché St. George, an East Vancouver café and general store on St. George, says one of its outdoor tables was stolen while it was closed for Truth and Reconciliation Day, and it has asked the person responsible to return the table.
In a post shared by the café, Le Marché said, “Stealing from a small business is like stealing from an individual,” adding that it “go[es] out of our way to source things from this space so everyone can enjoy it.” The café also suggested the situation could be solved with “B.Y.O.T.”—“bring your own table day”—if the person “need[s] to.”
Le Marché said the theft was upsetting not only because something was taken, but also because it would “hinder[] our ability to serve customers better,” given the café’s already limited capacity to accommodate guests.
The post drew comments from the community, including messages that condemned the theft as “not cool” and noting that stealing from a small business reflects poorly on the neighbourhood.
A community studio and art space called Luminous Studios said it has experienced similar theft.
Le Marché describes the business as a community hub and event space, and its website includes a description of the building as “honest” and “funky, handsome, all-crooked, old.”
