Burnaby School District says Sept. 21 ransomware attack may have exposed student and parent information

The Burnaby School District says a Sept. 21 ransomware attack affected its online services and that hackers may have copied files containing student and parent information.

The Story

The Burnaby School District says a ransomware attack it suffered on Sept. 21 affected its school websites and portals, internal network services and phone lines.

In a notice to the district’s community, officials said hackers copied and stole files that may have included lists of parent and guardian names and contact information, as well as student names and other identifying details.

The district said the files may also have contained birthdates, grades and school names.

It added that the hackers may have obtained registration forms, kindergarten assessment notes and detailed lists of students on specialized learning plans.

The district said the matter is in the hands of the RCMP and B.C.’s privacy commissioner, and that its system security is being evaluated to prevent further breaches.

The notice says staff, students and their families have been offered registration with TransUnion’s fraud alert service and are being encouraged to be wary of any suspicious communications.

“We understand that incidents of this nature are concerning and we remain committed to keeping the Burnaby Schools community updated throughout this process, as the investigation proceeds and additional information becomes available,” the notice said.
