Ottawa designates Port of Vancouver’s Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion as a project of national interest

Ottawa has designated the Port of Vancouver’s planned Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion in Delta, B.C., as a project of national interest.

The Story

Ottawa has officially designated the Port of Vancouver’s planned Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion as a project of national interest, a move that provides “immediate regulatory certainty to move forward,” according to Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon.

MacKinnon said the designation will add much-needed capacity at Canada’s largest port and help expand and diversify the country’s trade capacity.

The federal government said the designation also accelerates the project’s timeline for commercial operations by up to four years, to 2035.

Ottawa stated that environmental safeguards will be maintained and Indigenous communities will be consulted as the project proceeds.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is listed as the proponent for the project, which Ottawa says is on track to reach a final investment decision by the middle of next year.
