The Story

Walter Koenig, the actor best known for playing Ensign Pavel Chekov on the original “Star Trek” television series and several related films, has died. He was 90.

Koenig died Monday at his home in the North Hollywood neighbourhood of Los Angeles, according to a statement by his talent agent, Zachery McGinnis.

In “Star Trek,” Chekov was the sole Communist-bloc member on the Enterprise’s bridge crew. The series aired on NBC from 1966 to 1969 and later developed a long-running fan community.

Koenig’s castmate George Takei said in a post on X, “My heart is heavy. Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.”

McGinnis said Koenig’s legacy extended beyond screen roles, including his interactions with fans through convention appearances. McGinnis also said Koenig died surrounded by his daughter and niece.

Koenig played Chekov in seven “Star Trek” movies starting in 1979, and he wrote a “Star Trek” book titled “Chekov’s Enterprise” in 1980. The “Star Trek” franchise also spawned additional spinoff television series and conventions that draw thousands of fans.

He returned to science fiction with occasional appearances in the syndicated 1990s television series “Babylon 5.”
