The Port Moody Police Department says a 12-year-old boy was taken to hospital after being hit in the face by an exploding firework.
The Story
The Port Moody Police Department says it received a report of youths setting off fireworks near the Port Moody Recreation Complex on Ioco Road near Knowle Street shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
Police said attending officers found a 12-year-old boy who had just been hit in the face by a firework set off by one of his friends, while the boy’s friends fled and were located nearby.
The boy was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said the incident appears to have been accidental, but officers issued a $500 bylaw ticket to the youth responsible for setting off the firework.
In a statement, Sgt. Sam Zacharias said fireworks are prohibited year-round in Port Moody and may only be used if a permit has been obtained through Port Moody Fire Rescue, adding that anyone caught violating the bylaw may also face seizure and a violation ticket.
